Ask Us Anything: Your Kitchen Remodel Questions Answered
We’re back with our “Ask Us Anything” blog series, where our Kitchen Designers, Amy Richardson, Cindy Bennett-McCune, and Tina Monk, weigh in and share their knowledge on all things kitchen-related.
Today’s blog features our Kitchen Designer Amy Richardson‘s expertise when answering a soon-to-be homeowner’s question about planning for a kitchen remodel.
I just recently bought a house that needs a kitchen facelift. We are still in the process of closing but wanted to get a head start on planning the remodel to see if we can get it done before we move in.
Q: What’s the best way to get designer quotes? Will designers frown upon giving quotes over the phone to someone who actually hasn’t closed on the house? Should we wait till we close before getting someone to see the kitchen in person? Do these estimates cost money?
A: Since there is a huge range in pricing a kitchen, you will want to wait until you have access to the home so that the designer can get accurate measurements and an overall feel for the house/style. It depends on the company whether or not there is a charge for this. Here at Brunswick Cabinets and Countertops, we do not. Designer quotes are a complimentary service we offer to give you a chance to get a feel for us to determine if we are the right fit to earn your business.
Q: If designers charge per hour, what’s a reasonable amount of time to expect them to spend on the remodel? Is a flat fee for a project better?
A: Depends on the company you use. As Designers, we can spend on the low end 8-10 hours during the consultation, to the measurement and design phase (with revisions) before you are presented with a design quote on your project.
Q: What’s the average cost of a remodel these days? Can it be done for under 75k?
A: The short answer is yes. But, the real answer is it depends. There are a lot of questions you’ll want to answer. If your budget is under 75K, an experienced Kitchen Designer can make sure you stay within budget and share with you the decisions that have the potential to push you over budget. You’ll discuss everything starting with what you are going to remodel. New cabinets, new countertops, new backsplash, and new flooring? What’s your preference for materials (budget-friendly Level 1 Granite or a higher-end quartz)? Will your dream kitchen require you to change the kitchen layout (and necessitate that you move plumbing or electrical an added expense)? Are you using a one-stop shop or multiple different contractors?
Q: What’s the turnaround time for completion of these projects? How do people eat through a remodel if living in the house?
A: Once the existing kitchen is removed, the typical turnaround time for just cabinets and countertops (no layout change) is about a month. Again, it depends on specific lead times with your cabinet vendor and countertop fabricator. You can set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave and fridge in a nearby room, preferably near a sink.
